What’s the difference between adversity and obstacles?

I’ve had both, and I’m sure you have too. It’s just a part of life.

Adversity is something that’s outside of your control, and it’s rare. When I lost both my husband and my son to suicide, that was adversity. That was beyond my control.

But what I’ve learned over the past 26 years of my life is that everything else is just an obstacle. And once you realize that something is an obstacle and within your control to work through, your life changes!

In my Live video, I gave 3 tips to work through your obstacles.

Tips #1: Stop Denying Your Part In It

Your biggest obstacle isn’t a lack of time, money, or education. It’s not that you’re in a difficult relationship. It’s not that your parents didn’t raise you well or that you don’t live in an ideal neighborhood. Your biggest obstacle is YOU.

It’s easier to blame factors that are “outside of my control.” That’s easier to swallow. I hope you trust that I love you and want the best for you when I say that it has nothing to do with your outside circumstances. It’s 100% you. You are your biggest bully. You are the one stopping yourself. You are the one sabotaging yourself.

Tip #2: Take Control of Your Self-Talk

What kind of things do you say to yourself? What stories about yourself do you believe? The first thing you need to do is start catching yourself. Start journaling and writing down what you tell yourself, what you hear yourself saying. Or you can ask someone you trust to help point out the things you say. A lot of times we aren’t even really aware until we have somebody that lovingly points it out.

When you figure you what you’re saying, no judgment. Don’t beat yourself up and make the problem even worse by telling yourself you’re a horrible person. Judgment serves no purpose. Just acknowledge the things you’re saying to yourself.

Tip #3: Get to Work!

Here’s the good news. Once you are humble enough to take ownership of how you act and how you talk to yourself, you can go to work! And the good news is when you go to work at fixing you and changing your stories and your beliefs and your situation, everything else changes just like that. That fast. It’s almost magical.

We all want to make a difference and have a purpose! But you can’t do that until you get out of your own way! I encourage you to start to acknowledge the obstacles you create for ourselves, work through them, and start heading towards your true purpose!
