How do you know if you’re living out your vision and purpose? I recently got a chance to connect with people, specifically young adults, and talk about why they need purpose in their lives. There are three lessons that I learned from this experience. I was taken me outside my comfort zone, and it made me reevaluate whether or not I was heading towards my real purpose. Luckily, I’ve been around the block before and I know how to interpret a lot of the things I was thinking and feeling.
Check out my Facebook Live where I speak about these three lessons, or continue reading below for the highlights.
Lesson #1: Don’t Misinterpret Self-Doubt
There are times when I hear a lot of doubt in my head saying, “Who are you to be doing this?” “You should get off this path.”
I don’t hear voices like that very often, because I’ve been doing this for so long and I’m so sure of who I am and what I’m doing. But when I do hear those voices telling me that I’m not good enough and not worthy, I know exactly what it means. It means that I’m stepping into my purpose.
When you hear those voices, that doesn’t mean you’re going the wrong direction. It’s a response to the fact that you’re about to do something that will impact your life and the lives of people around you. And that means that you’re moving towards your purpose!
Lesson #2: Perfection Isn’t Required
My move to focus on young adults has pushed me way outside my comfort zone! I’ve had to step away from things I’ve been doing for the past 25 years without really knowing exactly how it’s going to play out. I want to do it, and I feel called to do it. But I don’t have it all figured out perfectly yet.
I was worried that, because I don’t have every piece figured out, people wouldn’t respond to my message. But, I have to tell you, quite the opposite happened. People showed up and gave me confirmation and a lot of encouragement. And it was amazing to know people get it. People get the mission I’m on, and they want to help.
When you start towards your purpose, you might think you need every bit to be perfect before you move forward, but you don’t. It’s your purpose. It’s your calling. Step into it and the rest will show up.
Lesson #3: Have a Purpose? Get Emotional!
If you’re working towards your purpose, you can’t do it without getting super emotional. All-day Sunday, I was a crying mess! And I was supposed to get up in front of a group of people and I didn’t know if I’d be able to talk without tears.
But, here’s the thing, if you can talk about what you’re working towards without getting passionate and emotional you’re probably not working for your purpose. Your purpose should light you up! It should stir up your emotions, don’t be afraid of that.
